Actuating pumps by fluid-pressure motors. - In a high-pressure piston compressor wherein the driving-apparatus actuates the compressor through oscillating columns of liquid, the pistons are exposed to the action of a column of liquid on both sides so that the pistons are positively actuated and do not seize. The cylinders 3, 4 of the pistons 5, 6 which actuate the compressor plungers 10, 11 respectively are mounted in castings 1, 2 arranged at the end of the cylinder in which the main, cross-head-operated piston 8 reciprocates. The upper faces of pistons 5, 6 are exposed to the action of the liquid columns 12 in cylinder 7, and the lower faces to the action of a coupling column enclosed in a casing 13. The cylinders 3, 4 are displaced from the axis of piston-rod 14. In a modification, one cylinder only is displaced.
