Abstract
1332799 I C Engine operated hydraulic pumps; liquid piston engines AS RIEKKINEN 12 Oct 1970 48397/70 Headings F1A and F1B An internal combustion engine operated pump unit comprises engine pistons 2 operating in opposed relation inside a common combustion cylinder 4, there being hydraulic pump pistons 15 integral with respective ones of pistons 2, the pistons 15 being reciprocable in respective pump cylinders 16. Liquid is supplied from the pump cylinders 16 to a motor 22, there being a solenoid operated valve 30 connected to each cylinder 16 which, in response to control unit 28 which receives information from a tachogenerator 26 about the velocity and/or position and/or acceleration of engine pistons, maintains valve 30 open for a part of the combustion stroke so that the hydraulic fluid is by-passed from the circuit to motor 22, the liquid going to reservoir 19. For the rest of the combustion stroke valve 30 is closed so that the liquid is used to operate motor 22. Pistons 3, integral with pistons 2 and 15 serve to compress gas in respective chambers of a cylinder 7 during the combustion stroke to provide a spring restoring force for the pistons 2. A pressure transducer 29 measure the output pressure of the pumping units and transmits information to control unit 28 so that, if the engine becomes overloaded, the effective pumping part of the combustion stroke, i.e. in which the liquid operates motor 22, is shortened.
