An hydraulic pump or motor comprises a cruciform piston member whose arms 26 engage in cylinder members 18 which are free to slide on shoes 50, fixed to the casing 10. The piston member is mounted on an eccentric 28 on a shaft 30. Inlet ports 34 and outlet ports 36 alternately open into or are shut off from each cylinder space 32 by the movement of the member 18. Liquid from the cylinder space 32 is fed via restricted passages 42 (Fig. 2, not shown) to the spaces between the relatively moving surfaces of the eccentric 28 and piston member and between the cylinder member 18 and shoe member 50. These areas of sliding contact are larger than the piston area and are substantially symmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the corresponding arm 26. These areas are related to the passages 42 to give a predetermined thickness of lubricant and under varying flow conditions the passages 42 oppose changes of film thickness by causing corresponding inverse changes in the average film pressure. The pump or motor unit may comprise more than one bank of cylinders. One bank may be rotatable relative to the other and the cylinders interconnected so that the output may be varied from a maximum to zero when the cylinders are 180 degrees out of phase to each other.
