Pens.-An iron for soldering or for writing or marking on metals, shown as a soldering-iron having a solder reservoir 3 heated by an electric heating-unit 8, is provided with a solid tip 1 of porous metal such as sintered tungsten through which the molten solder 4 soaks and from which it is transferred to the article when the tip is passed thereover. Recesses 10 may be formed in the tip to increase the rate of absorption of solder and the inlet may have a short tube 5 extending half way across the member 3 so as to prevent escape of solder if the iron is laid down.
