Abstract

674,661. Soldering and brazing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 9, 1950 [March 19, .1949], No. 5989/50. Class 83 (iv). A soldering iron bit has a copper body portion, a portion of iron which provides the soldering area and a coating of chromium applied over the iron surface outside but not inside the boundaries of the soldering area. A detachable bit 1, Fig. 1, having a wedge-portion 6 and a screw-threaded portion 5 is entirely coated on its copper body portion 8 with iron 9 over which, with the exception of an area 7 which is tinned, is provided a chromium coating 10. The iron coating 9 need only extend to the line 17 while chromium may be applied to the copper surface not iron coated. The chromium and iron may be applied by electro-plating while the iron may be brazed to the copper as an iron shell. In a modification, a bit comprising a copper body having an iron tip 11, Fig. 2, brazed thereto is calorized from the end 13 to the line 14 by heating in aluminium powder, and a layer of chromium 19 is provided on the remainder of the tip, including an overlapping portion to the line 15 but excluding the end portion 16.
