Abstract

796,884. Soldering and brazing. M.-O. VALVE CO., Ltd. July 6, 1956 [July 15, 1955]. No. 20625/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a thermionic valve having a sealed envelope 6 including a metal part 1 having an aperture hermetically closed by a disc 3, the disc has been cut from a corundum crystal, has a metal coating 4 bonded to its margin and is attached to the envelope by a metallic joint between the coating and the metal part. A cylindrical cup 1 of 43 per cent nickel 57 per cent iron alloy made by powder metallurgy has a shouldered circular aperture into which is fitted a coated disc of corundum, the surface of the cup having been cleaned by heating in wet hydrogen at 1000 ‹ C. and the parts adjacent the aperture where brazing is not required having been painted with alumina. The coating 4 is formed on the disc by preparing a paste from a powder of 160 grams of molybdenum powder and 40 grams of manganese powder by adding to 6 grams of the'powder 12 cc. of a binder made by dissolving 1.5 grams of pyroxylin in ethyl lactate, painting the paste on the disc which has been degreased with carbon tetrachloride, baked and masked where metallizing is not required, drying the paste in hot air and heating in wet hydrogen at 1400 C. to sinter the powder to the disc. The layer is cleaned and flashed with nickel electrolytically deposited. With the disc in the aperture a ring of brazing alloy 70 per cent copper 30 per cent silver is placed on the disc and the assembly heated in hydrogen at 800‹ C. to effect brazing. The cup is spigoted and soldered or brazed into the wall 6 of the envelope of a klystron or magnetron and a flanged nickel tube 8 is soldered or brazed to the wall for attachment to a waveguide. Soldering or diffusion sealing may be alternatives to brazing and the corundum may be formed by deposition and crystallization of fused alumina. Specification 796,883 is referred to.
