277,251. Dowson & Mason Gas Plant Co., Ltd., an( Paton, J. April 26, 1927. Annealing-furnaces.-A gasfired annealing-furnace or soaking-pit using air preheated in a cavity wall comprises an end wall with air preheating passes 8, 9. 10 delivering into a longitudinal air passage 19 with ports 20 arranged above gas ports 29 supplied, through a passage 28, from a main gas flue 24 running parallel with the air passage 19. In the opposite longitudinal wall of the chamber is the waste-gas flue 33 with damper-controlled ports 31. In the case of a battery of soaking-pits, the division walls and one end wall form independent air-heating walls each with its own damper and each communicating with its own air passage 19 and ports 20 and each pit has its own gas passage 28 and gas valve, while the main gas flue 24 and wastegas flue 33 are common to the battery.
