Abstract

283,009. Osman, A. E. Feb. 19, 1927. Multiple-chamber kilns.-In a continuous kiln each chamber has two end upcast shafts 8 with openings 14, through which the gases from side fire-places 5 can pass into the shafts and so to the kiln chamber, one shaft in each chamber being in communication, through a transverse flue 20, with longitudinal flues 11 beneath the floor of the preceding chamber of the series. The other shaft communicates at its lower end with longitudinal floor flues 12, and some of the gases drawn downwards through the chamber pass through ports 18 into the flues 12 and mix with fresh furnace gases in the upcast shaft 8. The longitudinal flues 11 communicate with the kiln chamber through ports and transverse passages 15, and each transverse flue so can be put into communication with a main flue 23 through a damper-controlled passage 24. The shafts 8 and fire-places 5 are formed by walls 22 extending from side to side of the chambers. Air from a chamber which is cooling down can be passed to any other chamber of the series through roof ports 37, flues 38 and a removable connection between the mouth 39 and a transfer flue 32.
