Continuous kilns. - Relates to downdraft continuous kilns for drying and burning bricks, tiles, &c., and includes modifications mainly in the flue arrangements for the transfer of the' heating-gases from chamber to chamber. In the construction shown, the kiln chambers are arranged in two lines with end cross connections, and at one end of each chamber is an upcast flue 8 leading from the floor flues of the preceding chamber of the series The furnaces 6 are within the chamber and on one or both sides of the flue 8, which has apertures in its side walls so that some of the gases from the furnaces will pass into the flue and mix with the gases from the preceding chamber. Beneath the floor of each chamber are transverse flues 12 leading into the upper parts of side longitudinal flues 11, which discharge into a transverse flue 9 at the furnace end of the succeeding chamber. From the flue 9 the gases are passed either intc the chamber through the upcast 8, or to the stack flue 15 through a damper-controlled' connection 16.
