Abstract

673,889. Tunnel kilns. GREEN, W. June 9, 1950 [March 9, 1949], No. 6480/49. Class 51 (ii). In a multi - track countercurrent tunnel kiln for firing ceramic ware divided into a central firing zone and, depend. ing on the direction of travel of ware trucks, drying or cooling zones 26 and preheating or soaking zones 27, the loaded trucks 14 enter from either end through air-lock chambers 16 formed by drop or side projected screens 17, trucks from the left-hand end A using the two centre tracks 13 and those from the right-hand end B using the two outer tracks 12. The trucks 14 have a chequered platform 18 on which the ware is stacked and walls extending longitudinally of the kiln and carrying the tracks 12, 13 are formed with upper chequered portions 23 and define ducts 25 below the trucks and ducts 24 between the tracks. The firing zone is provided with chambers 20 in which solid, liquid or gaseous fuel is burnt and with adjacent air ports 22, the hot combustion gases being deflected from the arched roof 15, through the ware 19, the chequered platforms 18 and walls 23 into the ducts 24, the gases in the centre and side ducts being drawn by fan suction towards the end A and those in the two intermediate ducts being drawn towards the end B where they collect in the respective air-lock chambers 16. Cold air is drawn along the two central ducts 25 towards A and along the two outer ducts 25 towards B where it mixes with the combustion gases in the respective air-lock chambers, the mixed gases and air passing by ducts 28 to inlet ports 31 formed in the preheating zones 27 at the level of the charges 19 and below the chequered platforms 18. Any carbonaceous material in the ware is burnt out in these zones, the resultant hot gases with moisture driven from the incoming ware being extracted through roof ports 33 and used to preheat the air supplied through the ports 22. If desired, the kiln may be muffle heated by providing an inner lining in the firing zone behind which combustion gases circulate and extending the ducts 24 upwards to meet this lining replacing the chequered section 23 of the duct walls by a solid section of wall.
