Metal-heating furnaces; muffle furnaces.-A furnace employing a recuperator for heating air for combustion is arranged so that at starting the heating-up of the working chamber is accelerated. For this purpose the hot gases leaving the working chamber, through outlets b at one end, are directed upwardly to a passage e over the crown, while on attainment of the working temperature they are directed downwardly to bottom flues f passing beneath the recuperators and thence by a flue i to the chimney. The flues e and i terminate in a two-ported chimney outlet the ports of which are controlled respectively by two dampers g, h. The recuperators consist of flat boxes n fitted with baffles and delivering heated air to spaces p below the combustion chambers k and communicating therewith by ports q. Ports s deliver the hot gases into, or in the case of a muffle, around, the working chamber,
