Muffle furnaces.-In a gas-fired furnace for the heat treatment of metal articles of the kind comprising a chamber d surrounded by transverse flues c, through adjacent ones of which the heating-gases flow in opposite directions, the flue b leading from the gas-producer has on opposite sides inclined outlet ports b<1> adjacent to ports e<1> delivering air from recuperators having superimposed gas-waste flues c<1> arranged zigzag fashion with intervening spaces e for heating the secondary air. The ports e<1> are curved at their upper parts to direct the streams of air into the gas issuing from the ports b<1>, and the flues c are separately controlled by dampers c<2>. The door and door frame of the muffle are ground and inclined to ensure a good fit.
