Abstract

226,739. Owen, W. H. Oct. 5, 1923. Regenerators.-Air for combustion in boiler furnaces is heated in chambers a, a<1>, Fig. 1 arranged side by side and containing plain or corrugated sheet iron plates a<x> over which hot gases and air are passed alternately. The hot gases from the flue c according to the position of the valves d, d<1> pass through one of the chambers a, a<1>, and thence to the flue c<1>, while air entering through the inlet f<1> behind the screen e<1> enters the other chamber and escapes through the outlet f behind the screen e. Where it is desired to heat the air supplied above the grate to a higher temperature than the air supplied to the ash-pit, a modified form of regenerator shown in Fig. 3 is employed. Each regenerator chamber is divided into two sections a<2>, a<3> separated by a chamber a<4> adapted to communicate with an air trunk f<2> provided with an additional reversing valve d<2>. Part of the air heated in the portion a<3> of the regenerator passes to the trunk f<2> and thence to the ash-pit while the remainder is further heated in the portion a<2> and passes thence to the furnace above the grate. Perforated steam pipes g may be arranged at the end of the chambers to free the apparatus from soot and dust. The regenerator may be used in connection with oil-fuel furnaces in which case the portion of the air of higher temperature is supplied in the immediate neighbourhood of the oil spray while the portion of lower temperature is employed to effect the complete combustion of the oil. The regenerator may be arranged horizontally or vertically and in the application to marine boilers may be arranged over the smokebox.
