Abstract

12,110. Smith, T. M. May 22. Air, supplying.-Relates to means for heating the air supply for steam-generator or like furnaces and delivering it above the fire or into the flues, the essential feature in all the modifications being the employment of preheating-pipes or chambers arranged directly in the course of, and fully exposed to, the hot gases. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, air from the atmosphere enters one of the passages 1, 2 having vertically sliding valves 3, 4 and passes through the preheating - pipes 5 to the other passage, whence it flows into the heating-chambers 7, 8 and escapes therefrom through perforations. Air is also delivered from a hollow arch 6 having a slide 13, and from a pipe 10 connected to a chamber 9 provided with a valved inlet 14. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the preheating- chambers 8, connected with the atmosphere, deliver air to a passage 8<d>, whence it passes to the perforated chambers 8 ; a similar arrangement may be employed in connexion with the chambers 7a, or, as shown, these chambers may be connected directly with the atmosphere. As applied to a multitubular, externally-fired boiler, the hollow arch is dispensed with, and the passages 1, 2 are connected by pipes arranged in the flue behind the bridge, the hot air being discharged through chambers arranged similarly to the chambers 7, Fig. 1, and through an opening in the top of a hollow bridge. In this type of boiler furnace, the air may be heated in the return side flues. In the furnace shown in Figs. 10 and 11, a centtal chamber 1, having a dampered air inlet, is connected by preheating-pipes 5b with side chambers 2, 3, from tach of which the air passes to one of the hollow arches 6 and to the hollow bridge.
