BAGASSE=FURNCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,774, dated September 18, 1888.

Be it known th at I, WILLIAM W. SUTCLIFEE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bagasse-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to a furnace for burning wet bagasse, the purpose being to utilize the heat therefrom for the generation of steam in one or more boilers of the kind shown in the Letters Patent granted to me January 12, 1886, N o. 334,204.
It is also the purpose of my invention to combine the bagasse-furnace with the boilerfurnace upon one side of the latter, and without in any manner interfering with the ordinary boiler-furnace, setting, and grate-bars, whereby other fuel can be used in the regular boiler-furnace either in conjunction with the bagasse-furnace or alone, as may be desired.
It is a further purpose of my invention to combine with a water tube boiler furnace a bagasse-furnace located at the side of theboilerfurnace, the two being connected by hot air passages or fines, and being adapted to out off one from another or to be thrown into connecnection at will. y
To these ends my invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and then definitely set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure is 1 a longitudinal vertical section illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is avertical section of Fig. 2 in the plane indicated by line x 00. l
In the said dra\vings,the reference-numeral 1 denotes the boiler-furnace, in which I preferably use the Root multitubular water-tube boiler manufactured by Abendroth and Root. The boiler-furnace 1 is supplied with the usual setting and grate-bars employed in this class of boilers.
Upon one side of the boiler-furnace 1 is arranged the bagasse-furnace 2, having a combustion chamber, 3, to which access is had by doors 4 and by way of a feed-opening, 5, for the bagasse. Leading from one side of the (No model.)
bagassefurnace are fines 6, giving free communication between the combustion-chamber 3 and the boiler-furnace. Dampers 7 are arranged in these fines, as shown in Fig. 3.
VIn the bridge-wall 8 of the boiler-furnace is formed an air-due, 9, having branch passages 10, by which communication is afforded with the space beneath the grate-bars of the boilerfurnace. Each of these branch openings is provided with a damper, 12. The air-flue 9 is continued into the bagasse-furnace and turned to enter a lateral air-chamber, 13, which communicates with the combustion-chamber 3 by tuyeres 14. The air-chamber 13 communicates by a passage, 15, with a similar chamber, 16, upon the other side, having like means of communication with the chamber 3. A damper, 17, is arranged in the air-Hue, 9. The fiue 9 derives its air from a fan, 18, the air driven by said fan being drawn through pipe 19,1ying in the smoke chamber 20, below the boilers, whereby the air impelled by said fan and driven in the boiler and bagasse furnaces will be heated. A draft-valve, 2l, is arranged in vthe smoke-chamber above the pipes 19, said smokechamber` having outlet by way of a chimney, 22.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
`The dampers 21 being opened and dampers 7 being closed, coal or other fuel isintroduced into the furnace beneath the boilers, anda fire is kindled. When sufficient steam is generated, thc engine is started and-the fan 18 is set in motion. The dampers 12 are now opened, permitting air to bass into the ash-pit of the boiler-furnace, the damper 17 being closed to cut off communication with the bagasse-furnace. When sufficient steam is raised and the crushing-mechanism is started, bagasse is introduced into the bagasse-furnace through the opening 5 and is fired, whereupon the valve 17 and dampers 7 are opened, admitting air through the tuyeres 14 to the combustionchamber 3, and also giving free communication between the latter and the boiler-furnace by way of the dues 6. The passages 15 beneath the combustion-chamber 3 are preferably made of tile, though other material may be used, and by their location the air received from the fan and already heated in the pipes 19 and passage 9, of the bridge-wall is addi- IOO tionally heated before entering the tuyeres 1i. Then bagasse is fed through the opening 5 in proper quantity, the use of other fuel in the boiler-furnace may be wholly dispensed with, the steam being generated entirely by the heat supplied by the bagassc-furnaee. This heat passes from the bagasse-furnace into thc boilerfurnace through the fines G, whence it passes upward between and around the tubes of the boiler, filling the upper chamber and heating the steam-tubes 23. Thence the heat descends between and around the water-tubes into the smoke-draft, which is regulated by the damper 21, where it heats the air in pipes 19,and then passes into the chimney.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that either furnace may be used independenti y or both in unison, as circumstances may require.
The fan-blower 18 may be applied to the outer ends of the pipes 19, at which air enters, and said air may therefore be driven through the said pipes in place of being drawn through, as would be the case when the blower is located as shown'in Fig. 2.
W'hat I claim is- 1. The combination, with a boiler-furnace, of a bagasse-furnace arranged upon one side thereof, said bagasse-furnace having a combusti0n-chamber provided with communicating air-chambers having tuyeres on each side of the combustion-chamber, Said air-chambers being supplied by a iue passing th rough the bridgewall of the boiler-furnace and communicating with the ash-pit thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a boiler-furnace, 0f a bagasse-furnace arranged beside it, the bridge-wall ofthe boiler-furnace having an airiinecommunicatingwith the combustion-chainber of the bagasse-furnace and the ash-pit of the boiler-furnace, and a fan-blower supplying air to said flue, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a boiler-furnace having a bridge-wall containing a iiue having a branch passage communicating with the ashpit,a damper controlling said branch passage,a blower for conveying air to the bridge-wall flue, and a bagasse-furnace having a combustionchamber provided with a uehavinga damper and adapted to communicate with the boilerfurnace, substantially as described.
4. A bagasse-furnacc having a combustionchaniber provided with air-chambers on both sides, provided with tuyeres entering said chamber, said air chambers communicating with each other by fiues beneath the combustion-chamber, in combination with a boilerfurnace having a lue in its bridge-wall communicating with the ash-pit and with the airchanibers of the bagasse-furnace, a fan-blower conveying air to said flue, and pipes arranged in the smoke-chamber of the boiler-furnace and conveying air to said fan, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a bagasse-furnace having a combustion-chamber, 3, and double clean-cut doors 4, and provided with air-chambers 13, having tuyeres 14, of the flue 9, having a damper, I7, and a boiler-furnace communicati ng with the bagasse-furnace by fines 6, having dampers 7, substantially as described.
(i. The combination, with a boiler-furnace and a bagasse-i'nrnace having a flue, 6, leading from its combustion-chamber into the boilerfurnace above the grate thereof, of tuyereopenings 14 in the base of the combustioncliamber of the bagasse-furnace, a ilue, 9, connecting the said tuyere openings with the boiler-furnace beneath its grate, a hot-air pipe, 19, heated by the products of combustion in their passage to the chimney and connected with said latter line, and a fan or blower, 18, substantially as described.
