Actuating - mechanism. - In counterweighed hand operating mechanism for heavy gate valves comprising a hand lever 2, weight 3, and a link, the link is formed in two parts 4, 8 with an interposed spring 11, or a pneumatic buffer, so that after the valve has come to rest in closing, the counterweight continues to move and compress the spring or buffer, whereupon the mechanism is locked in this position by a bolt or trigger 12. In opening the valve the trigger 12 is first released by a foot pedal 16 thereby allowing the spring &c. to recoil and transfer its energy to the counterweight for starting the valve from its closed position.
