Actuating-mechanism.-A toggle valve e actuating mechanism has a spring support for the toggle joint o r has one of the members mounted on a spring-pressed rocker arm so as to allow the valve to lift in the event of an excessive pressure arising in the vessel to which the valve is fitted. In the form shown, the valve 10 is carried by a lever 3 mounted on a shaft 5 supported in bearings 7 on the valve seat 8. The lever 3 is linked by a pair of plates 9 to a lever 1 adapted to be actuated by hand gear on a hydraulic piston connected to the member 11. The lever 1 is pivoted at 2 to a rocker 13 pivoted at 14 and adjustably connected to a sliding member 18 acted on by a spring 16. In a modification the rocker is dispensed with and the link 9 is pivoted to a member slidable against the action of a spring in a socket formed in the lever 1.
