275,728. Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Adams, H. May 12, 1926. Contact-making relays.- A two-step relay has the winding for effecting the partial operation mounted on a portion of the core of small cross-section as compared with the core surrounded by the winding for effecting the full operation so that a considerable increase in the current through the first winding will not appreciably increase the pull on the armature. As shown in the Figure the winding 3 for effecting partial operation of the armature 5 is wound on a portion of the core 2 of smaller diameter than that surrounded by the main winding 4 so that the constricted portion is normally approaching saturation and variations of the applied voltage make little difference on the pull of the armature. The constricted portion of the core may be formed by turning down a portion of a standard core iron. The relay may be used to operate as a marginal relay over junction telephone lines and the second winding may be energized by operation of x springs by the partial attraction of the armature.
