Compound boilers comprise a cylindrical boiler, an economizer spaced from the back end of the boiler consisting of vertical or inclined tubes connected to upper and lower drums, the steam space of the upper drum being connected with the steam space of the boiler, and the lower drum not being directly connected with the boiler, and upcast circulating tubes at the back end of the boiler. A boiler 1 includes circulating tubes 6 which lead to a water box or drum 10 with connections 12, 11 to the bottom of the boiler and to a feed drum 4 constituting the upper drum of an economizer 3. A superheater 13 is located between the circulating tubes which act as a screen and the economizer. The steam space of the drum may be directly connected to the boiler steam space or by a pipe 8 to the inlet compartment of the superheater drum 14 to which a pipe 9 leads from the boiler. The lower drum 5 of the economizer has no direct connection with the boiler. The drum 10 is supported by a spring buffer 17 or may rest on a roller situated on an inclined plane; or the drum may be suspended from a girder by a swinging arm.
