Abstract

268,768. Krupp Germaniawerft Akt.- Ges., F. March 31, 1926, [Convention date]. Waste heat, utilizing.- In a two-stroke engine in which the exhaust gases are utilized to heat a boiler, the pressure of the scavenging air of the engine is regulated in accordance with the pressure of steam from the boiler. As shown, scavenging air is supplied to the engine by a pipe C having an extension D with escape ports d<1> controlled by a slide valve E. A piston F on the stem of the valve moves in a cylinder d<2> connected by a pipe H to the steam outlet pipe of the boiler. A spring G under the piston F tends to open the valve E to allow part of the scavenging air to escape. An increase in the pressure of steam from the boiler tends to close the valve E, increasing the amount of scavenging air entering the engine and lowering the temperature of the exhaust gases, so that the rate of generation of steam is. automatically decreased. The valve E is closed, when the boiler is not in use, by a hand-actuated screw J engaging the piston F. In modifications, a valve such as E may be handcontrolled. or may control the admission of air to the scavenging-air pump. When scavenging-air pumps or blowers are driven independently of the engine, their speed may be regulated by steam pressure or by hand.
