Abstract

Transformers.-In high-potential A.C. distribution systems a cheap form of series transformer is provided for the operation of the air-break switches on overload. The transformer comprises a primary winding 10, Fig. 4, in series with the protected conductor and wound upon an openended core 12 remotely disposed in relation to a secondary winding 11 on another open ended core 13 so that the magnetic linkage between the two is small. The two cores are arranged at opposite ends of a long insulator 20, Fig. 1, so as to be in vertical alignment and at right angles to the power conductor. The secondary winding is connected with a sensitive relay having a magnet structure 14 of low retentivity made, for example, of 4 per cent silicon steel and having a spring-controlled thin plate armature 16 which is weighted at 17 to provide the necessary inertia to make the armature relatively unresponsive to vibrations.
