Abstract

261,961. Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd., and Nicholson, A. I. Feb. 25,1926. Motor power plant.-The waste heat of an internal-combustion engine is used to generate steam in a generator, which may also be independently heated, and the steam is supplied to an engine which drives an electric generator electrically connected with a main electric generator or an electric motor operatively connected with the internal-combustion engine. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 the hot exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine e are lead to the combustion chamber of a vertical fire-tube boiler a which generates steam for a steam turbine b driving an electric generator c. Part of the power of the generator c is used to assist the engine shaft u through an electric motor g which may be geared thereto or directly mounted on the shaft. The boiler may be oil fired in addition and the motor g used to start the engine e. A scavenging or supercharging blower h Fig. 3 may also be driven by the turbine.
