Abstract

233,078. Zarlatti, F. Feb. 19, 1924. Compressed-air engines.-In a compressed-air locomotive, the air is generated by an internalcombustion engine, stored in the locomotive boiler, and conducted to the cylinders through water heated by the engine exhaust. In the heater the air and exhaust gases flow in opposite directions. The smoke and fire boxes are closed and filled with water which is circulated by a pump through the fire tubes and through the jackets of the compressor and engine. This water may also be used to make up for losses in the heater. The engine 2, such as a Diesel, may drive a compressor 1 or itself generate compressed air. The boiler may be partly filled with water, which may be heated by the header 3.
