Starting.- A Diesel engine for locomotives is started by admitting compressed air &c. to one or more scavenging pumps 7 connected. by coanecting-rods 21 to one or more of the driving-wheels 13, which are connected to each other and to the engine crankshafts 9 by coupling-rods 12. The compressed air is admitted from a reservoir 14 on opening a valve 15, and the slide valve 18 of the pump may be actuated by reversing gear to enable starting to be effected in either direction.
