Spindle apparatus for twisting and winding yarns comprises a driven frame, comprising arms 35 secured to a wharl 25, a guide 40 secured to a top ring 34 of the frame, a reciprocating guide 41 which slides on the arms 35, and a tube-holder which is mounted on a non-driven and preferably fixed spindle and is retarded by wings 55. The guide 40 is so shaped as to impose restraint upon the yarn and thereby to confine the twist to the yarn extending therefrom to the supply point. The guide 41 may be a simple eye to impose a light tension on the yarn, and is mounted on a, sliding carriage, which is shaped to engage the arms 35 when they are square or is splined thereto when they are round, and is provided with fingers 45 to straddle a reciprocating plate or bar 47. The tube-holder comprises a conical sleeve 52 and a base carrying the wings 55 to impart the necessary drag. The tube 57 lightly embraces the spindle 20, which is integral with or secured to a post 14 secured in a socket 11. The wharl is provided with a depending sleeve 27, and bearing rings 31 are interposed between it and the socket 11, which is shaped to form an oil well 30 provided with lubricating ducts 28, 29 and is protected by a cap 32 on the wharl.
