[Class 120 (ii)] A twisting and winding machine for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail comprises a rotatable spindle adapted to carry a yam support, guide means, e.g. a ring and traveller, for guiding the yarn to the support to be twisted and wound thereon, means for imparting to the guide means a chaser motion with a traverse stroke of constant length, means for superimposing on the chaser motion a to-and-fro builder motion of lower frequency than the chaser motion, and means for momentarily extending the length of the downward stroke of the guide means below the combined traverse of the chaser and builder motions, so as to cause the winding of a small amount of yarn on the support at a point spaced from the main body of yarn subsequently wound thereon. Yarn 3 is twisted and spun by a ring and traveller carried by a ring rail 9 biased upwardly by an adjustable weight 72 operating through arms 71, 60, shaft 54 and lifter rods 68. The rail is positively lowered by a traverse cam 18 on a driven shaft 19 which operates to oscillate a lever 22 by a constant amount about a shaft 23. The lever 22, through a follower 27, bears on a cam 26 on another lever 24 also pivoted on the shaft 23, the cam 26 which builds the yarn up and down being rotated by the shaft 23 through gears 33, 34, 35, 38, 39. Attached to the lever 24 is a chain &c. 41 which through drums 46, 47 and chain &c. 50 moves a lever arm 53 to lower, positively, the ring rail 9. Between the lever arms 22, 24 is positioned a pneumatic cylinder and piston, the piston rod 83 bearing against the lever 22 and the cylinder, which is supplied by air pressure through a pipe 80 being attached to the lever 24. At the beginning of the wind, air is admitted to the cylinder 78 which operates to force the arm 24 downwardly below its lowest normal position so that a transfer tail is wound on the support 13. The pneumatic device 78, 83 may be replaced by mechanical or electrical means. The arm 60, through a rod 70, effects the raising and lowering of the pig-tail yarn guides 4 which are set in a bar 5.
