Abstract
654,148. Building and traverse motions for textile spinning or twisting machines. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. April 2, 1947, No. 8947. Convention date, July 8, 1946. '[Class 120(ii)] Traverse mechanism for a machine having means for winding yarn, such as a spinning or twisting machine, comprises a lifter rail supported by links attached to bell-crank levers mounted in parallel relationship which are arranged to be swung in unison so as to actuate the lifter rail, the latter being constrained to move in a straight line by including in the supporting links a pair of links suitably interconnected. Bell-crank levers 3 are connected by a common rod 10, associated through a link 14 with a reciprocating lever 15a of a builder mechanism. The lifter rail 2 is connected to the bell-crank levers 3 by links 12 (only one shown), and lever 5, which extends beyond the rail 2 and is pivoted to a link 6 pivoted to a fixed bracket 7. The arm 3a of bell-crank lever 3 and the link 6 may, or may not, be equal in length, but the rail 2 is pivotally connected to the lever 5 at a point 8, which is the point of intersection of a line 9 extending between the pivots in fixed brackets 4 and 7 with the rail 2, when the rail is in an intermediate, position. The lever 15a of the builder mechanism is adjustably mounted on a bifurcated lever 15b pivoted at 24 to a supporting housing. A link 17 is pivoted to lever 15b at 25 and to a link 18 at 26, the pivot bearing 26 also carries a cam follower 28. Link 18 is pivoted at 27 to a lever 16a oscillatably mounted on a bearing 29 and carrying a cam follower 31 held in contact with a positively driven cam 19. If the cam follower 28 operates in conjunction with a cylindrical member, the cam 19 constrains the builder mechanism, through the traverse mechanism, to reciprocate the lifter rail to give a stroke of uniform depth across the full height of a bobbin. When it is desired to produce a tapered top or "bottle" shaped winding, a builder cam 20 may be used, which co-operates with the cam follower 28 to alter the angular disposition of lever 15b with respect to the lever 16a. Cam 20 is rotated by a ratchet and pawl, the latter being mounted on a lever which is spring- urged towards the lever 16a so that the rise and fall of the lever 16a and consequent movement of the spring-urged lever slowly turn the cam 20. The mechanism may be employed to traverse the bobbin or the cap rails of a cap frame, or the bobbin or the ring rails of a ring frame, or a thread guide rail.
