237,986. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. May 7, 1924. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to the firing mechanism of ordnance having a transversely sliding breech-block. According to the invention, the sear is operated by an arm which, when the breech is closed, engages a spring-controlled firing member pivoted on one of the walls of the breech recess. As shown, the breech-block A<2> slides verticallv in a recess formed by side walls A'. The sear C is formed with a vertically extending arm D<2>, the end of which, when the breech is closed, lies in contact with a laterally extending arm D<1> of a firing member D which is pivoted by a pivot d' in a recess in the left-hand side wall A'. The breech-block A<2> is formed with a projection a<2> which, in the event of the firing member not being restored to its normal position by its spring d, engages the arm D<1> of the firing member and prevents the breechblock from being opened, or if the breech is already open, positively restores the firing member to its normal positon when the breech is closed.
