Abstract

235,897. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Hall, C. I.). June 20, 1924, [Convention date]. Alternating-current motors; field magnets; polepieces; casings.-An induction motor is provided with a number of separate shading-coils arranged one within the other and enclosing different areas of the pole faces so as to give a progressive shift to the flux in the air-gap. Magnetic shunts are provided to reduce the vertical component of flux threading the disc. Increased torque is thus produced and humming is reduced. As shown applied to a gramophone motor, field coils 25 are mounted on hollow cores 12 integral with a skeleton casting 10, the cores being provided with grooves 27 in which are located a number of shading-coils 26 defining pole regions A - - D producing a progressive flux shift across a disc rotor. The vertical component of flux threading the disc is reduced by magnetic shunts 28 keyed to the pole regions D. The co-operating pole faces 24 are mounted upon a skeleton casting 11, the castings 10, 11 fitting together by screws and forming a box-like enclosure for the motor. Specification 229,898 is referred to.
