Abstract
519,662. Exciting dynamos; pole-pieces. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 20, 1938, No. 30373. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1937. Addition to 519,629. [Class 35] A generator of the crossfield type, as in the parent Specification, has its field poles so disposed as to give air-gaps of non-uniform reluctance which prevent the excitation from the auxiliary continuouscurrent source from increasing the no-load current. Fig. 1 shows a machine in which the gaps are widened from the leading pole-tips 30 to the trailing tips 29 (rotation being counter-clockwise). The auxiliary excitation source 20 is connected through a reversing switch 24, for reversing the machine polarity, to the commutating and series coils 21, 23 and 17, 19. Magnetic shunts 51, with damping coils 54, are held pivotally on the pole-piece 27 by bolts 56 and springs 57 and are adjusted by means of a threaded shaft 58, In the form shown in Fig. 2, the graded gap reluctance is obtained by forming the pole-shoes with two portions 67, 70 concentric with the armature but of different radii so as to. give a shorter gap under the leading portions 73 and a longer gap under the trailing portions 75 of the poles.
