Abstract

235,315. Meil, J. M. March 14, 1924. Disc apparatus.-A grinding-machine comprises a grinding-wheel 1 mounted on a shaft 2 running in bearings in a cylindrical member 10, which is mounted on a pedestal 4. The periphery of the wheel projects a short distance through a slot 8 in a table 7 mounted on a stem 9, which is adjustably carried by the member 10, so that it may be lowered as the wheel wears away, and for this purpose a screw 18 engaging the stem is provided ; the weight of the table may be counterbalanced by a weighted lever 14 or by a spring 16, and the stem is clamped in adjusted position by a pinching-screw or a split in the member 10 and a clamping-screw. A guard 24, or a hinged guard 25, is provided for the wheel. Packing 27 may be provided to prevent the entrance of dust to the bearings. The member 9 may slide outside the member 10 instead of inside. In a modification, the table carries two downwardly extending cylindrical members sliding within cylindrical sockets, and in a further modification, the table carries two downwardly extending members of rectangular cross-section, the base of the machine carrying upwardly extending members which contact with the downwardly extending members on all sides. The table or the base may be so shaped as to enclose, or partially enclose, the grinding-wheel.
