Abstract

553,720. Cutting &c. diamonds. ASQUITH, Ltd., W., and JOHNSON, A. Feb. 11, 1942, No. 1794. [Class 60] A machine for cutting and polishing diamonds &c. by lapping is provided with rotatable bearings in which the ends of the lap spindle are held so that no relative movement takes place between the bearings and spindle during rotation. For this purpose, the lap spindle C is formed with conical ends c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> which fit into recesses in the ends of the spindles D, E of antifriction bearings J, e. The upper bearing J is counter-balanced by an adjustable volute spring j<SP>4</SP> and can be raised or lowered by a hand-operated rack and pinion, being clamped in its adjusted position by brake shoes operated from a handle j<SP>7</SP>. The disc is mounted in an aperture in a table F and is driven by a belt K from an adjustably mounted motor P. The table is finished with bearing surfaces for the dop appliances and an apertured cover plate for the lap is provided.
