799,498. Grinding. MORAN, H. FERNANDEZ-. Sept. 2, 1955 [Sept. 4, 1954], No. 10682/57. Divided out of 799,497. Class 60. The cutting edge of a diamond is polished on a rotating disc using a paste containing diamond powder of grain size between 0À002 and 0À005 microns and a sufficient linear grinding speed to produce a burning-off rather than a grinding effect. Preferably, the diamond to be polished has a laminar structure and is polished in a direction parallel to the planes of cleavage and the cutting edge. The diamond powder may be obtained by centrifuging and ultra-centrifuging an oil suspension of fine diamond powder. The polishing disc 48 may be rotated at 10,000 to 40,000 revolutions per minute. As shown, it is keyed to shaft 49, the pointed lower end of which rests on an axially movable plate 50 of polished hard metal carborundum or diamond. Shaft 49 is mounted in V-shaped bearing 51 of bronze or diamond. Handle 65 lifts and traverses the diamond 57 through link 67 and column 61 pivoted in sleeve 62.
