Abstract

333,121. Jackson, C. E., Hunt, T. J., and Turner, R. C. Nov. 12, 1929. Disc apparatus; guides; spindle mountings; balancing rotating tools; wheels. - A surface grinding machine consists of a base 1 having at its top a flat work table 2 through which projects the operative face of a cup-shaped grinding- wheel 13, the central space of which may receive a circular table 20 projecting from a plate 21 secured to the table 2, the plate being recessed to clear the grinding-wheel. The wheel is secured by a clamping-plate 14 and a nut to a spindle 5 supported by a double ball bearing 6, and a single ball bearing 7 in a slide 3; the central portion of the spindle is increased in diameter and runs in a sleeve 8. The slide 3 is adjustable vertically on the base 1 by a shaft 17<1> screwed to engage a spherical member 18 in a projection from the slide; the shaft carries a hand-wheel 17 which may be graduated. The spindle 5 is driven by a belt passing over a pulley 9 and ball bearing jockey pulleys 12 from fast and loose pulleys 11. On the plate 21 is a guide fence 22 adjustable by slotted arms 23 and nuts 24; the fence is open at its bottom face and has a spigot for connection to a dust extractor. The axis of the grinding-wheel may be tilted slightly for which purpose the guides for the slide 3 are pivotally mounted at 27 on the base. The wheel may be balanced by weights adjustable around an undercut groove in the plate 14. For grinding spaced surfaces, two machines as described are mounted on a bed plate, one being movable to and from the other, and to assist in supporting the work the work tables have forward projections which carry fillets to support the work. The portion 33 of the work table may be removable to enable work to be ground up to a shoulder.
