This invention relates to power operated disk grinders and polishers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a grinder and polisher of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which may be easily and quickly operated and manipulated to provide the desired edge surfaces at the periphery of the disk.
lVith this object in view the invention includes means for properly holding the disk with relation to the polishing and grinding wheels or elements so that the disk is properly balanced upon its support and is proper- 1y presented to the element which operates upon its periphery.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the disk grinder and polisher.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the same.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view through the disk holder of the machine.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings the disk grinder and polisher comprises a standard 1. Bearing arms 2 are mounted at the upper end of the stand 1 and a shaft 3 is journaled in the bearing arm. A belt puller 4 is mounted upon the shaft 3 at a point between the arms 2 and around which a usual belt (not shown) may be trained. As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings a grinding disk 5 is mounted upon the shaft 3 and is located at a point to one side of the stand 1. Guide rails 6 are connected with the stand 1 at the upper end thereof and are also supported upon legs 7 which rest upon the surface of the floor. The guide rails 6 are spaced from each other and a head block 7' is slidably mounted between the said guide rails. A screw 8 is ournaled in a cross piece 9 located at the outer ends of the guide rails and disposed across the space between the same and the inner portion of the screw 8 is threaded through the pending lugs 10 provided upon the head block 7 A yoke 11 is pivoted by means of a bolt 12 upon the block 7 and a cross pin 13 is carried by the said nnn ro-rrsrrna u 1931., semi No. 538317.

A vertically disposed bearing 18 is mounted upon the inner end of the lever 15 and a spin- :dle :19 is journaled 'insthe rsaidparts 18. Clamping members 20 and 21 are mounted upon the upper-end of the spindle 19 and may be: tightened thereon by the use of a nut 22 which isscrew threaded upon the upper end of thesaidspindle. .As indicated in Figure 3 ofth'e drawings the center of the spindle 19' is 'locatedat one side of the plane of the grinding wheel 5. A disk indicated in dotted line i'at 23 in Figure-3. of the drawings is placed upon the upper portion of the spindle ,19ubetween the clamping members 20 and 21.3The conveXed-surfa-ce of the'disk- 23 is upwardly disposed and the lever 15 and .blocksjl7 are adjusted along the guide rails 16 so that thefedg'e' ofthe disk 23 comes in contact with the periphery of the grinding wheel 5. In view of the fact that the plane of the said wheel is located at one side of the center of the spindle upon which the disk is mounted the said disk is turned or rotated by the action of the wheel as the wheel rotates in polishing or grinding.
The weight 11 is adjusted along the lever 15 so that the disk is held properly toward the grinding wheel.
After the conveXed surface of the disk has been ground the disk is removed from the spindle and turned so that its concaved surface is upwardly disposed toward the shaft 3. The grinding wheel 5 is removed and a polishing wheel is placed upon the shaft 3 and the inner surface of the edge of the disk is polished andat the same time the operation of the parts will be the same as that hereinbefore described in connection with grinding the periphery of the disk, the only difference being that in the grinding operation the convexed surface of the disk is upwardly disposed while in the polishing operation the concaved surface of the disk is upwardly disposed.
Having described the invention what is 5 claimed is:
1. A disk grinding and polishing machine comprising a stand, a shaft journaled thereon, a polishing or grinding element carried by the shaft, spaced guide rails leading to the upper portion of the stand, a head block slidabl mounted between the guide rails, a screw or moving the head block, a yoke pivoted upon the head block, a lever pivoted to the yoke, a weight adjustably mounted upon the outer end portion of the lever, a spindle mounted upon the inner portion of the lever, clamping elements carried by the spindle, the center of the spindle being located to one side of the plane of the grinding or polishing elements.
2. A grinding or polishing machine comprising a stand a shaft journaled at the upper end thereof, a grinding or polishing element carried by the shaft and located at a point to one side of the stand, guide rails connected with the upper portion of the stand and spaced from each other, legs supporting the outer ends of the guide rails, a cross piece connecting the outer ends of the guide rails together, a screw journaled in the cross piece, a head block slidably mounted between the guide rails and engaged by the screw, a yoke pivotally mounted upon the head block, a lever pivoted to the yoke, a weight slidably mounted uponthe outer end of the lever, a spindle mounted at the inner end of the lever, a sleeve surrounding said spindle, clamp members mounted upon the spindle the center of the spindle being located to one'side of the plane of the grinding or polishing element.
