Relief devices; two or more barrels in series; regulating delivery by by-passes ; regulating delivery of two combined pumps.-In pumping apparatus of the kind described in Specifications 182,154 and 198,771, [Class 135, Valves &c.], for artificial silk &c. comprising two pumps 1, 2 in series and a by-pass valve 22 for excess liquid pumped by the pump 1 controlled by a diaphragm 18 exposed on the upper side to the delivery pressure of the pump 1 and on the other side to the delivery pressure of the pump 2, an auxiliary device, such as a piston valve 29, is exposed on its opposite ends 30, 31 to the pressures on the opposite sides of the diaphragm, so that, when an excess pressure exists in the delivery of the pump 2, the valve moves up to connect the delivery of the pump 2 to the intake of the pump 1 through pipes 34, 35, 7, or to the by-pass chamber 13 through the passages 34, 32, 26, and thereby relieve the pressure in the chamber 16. The valve 29 mav also move down to relieve excess pressure on the bv-pass side of the diaphragm by connecting the chamber 13 to the intake side of the pump 1. In another form, the valve relieves the pressure under the diaphragm, but when an excess pressure arises on the by-pass side, it prevents relief until the diaphragm breaks. In another form, the two chambers 13, 16 communicate with opposite sides of a diaphragm or valve which relieves excess pressure in either chamber by breaking or moving.
