Boxes; cooling stuffing- boxes; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - The stuffing-box of a reciprocating or rotary pump for a steam plant is sealed, cooled and lubricated by liquid obtained by cooling or condensing part of the liquid or steam pumped. A space 41 in the stuffing-box is supplied with cooled liquid by a pipe 5 from the pump casing or other part, the pipe having a cooling arrangement, such as fins, or a chamber 6 supplied with cooling liquid. Alternatively, steam generated in a boiler 8 may be supplied to the pipe 5. In addition cooling liquid may be circulated through a jacket 7 in the stuffing-box.
