Abstract

724,510. Stuffing-box substitutes. LA MONT INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION, Ltd. Oct. 26, 1953, No. 29502/53. Class 122 (5). The shaft 2 of a boiler circulating pump is sealed by introducing feed water, which is at a higher pressure and lower temperature than the circulated boiler water, into an annular space 5 in the pump housing 4 from which space leakage toward the impeller 1 and in the opposite direction is limited respectively by a restriction bush 6 and by a floating restriction bush 8 followed by a mechanical seal 9 and a stuffing- box. The bush 6 is provided with internal grooves 7 and the bush 8 is pivotally mounted in the pump housing; both bushes having only a small clearance with a sleeve 3 on the pump shaft. The mechanical seal 9 is cooled by condensate from the extraction pump supplied to the seal housing 10 from which leakage is prevented by the stuffing-box packing 12.
