Abstract

1,033,869. Mechanical seals. ROY E. ROTH CO. April 13, 1965 [July 31, 1964], No. 15767/65. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] A rubbing collar-type seal for preventing flow of liquid between a turbine impeller 94 and a centrifugal impeller 161 comprises a stationary bushing 145 and a ring 153 adapted to be rotated, via a pin 154, by the turbine impeller and to be forced by the pressure of the liquid leaking past sealing surfaces 97 into contact with the bushing. The ring 153 is provided with a groove 156 in which the pin 156 engages, the groove permitting the ring to move into sealing contact with the sleeve, which is of carbon, under the action of the liquid pressure. In order to prevent the liquid flowing along the shaft 93 a second rubbing collar seal is provided having a ring assembly 111 additionally urged by springs 112 into contact with a stationary carbon ring 109. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), axially movable rings 224 rotatable with the shaft 170 are urged into contact with carbon bushes 221 by liquid pressure.
