Radiators, steam-locomotive; cooling water, tubular apparatus for.-In a condensing - apparatus the steam is passed into an elongated cylindrical vessel 1 containng liquid, which is pumped on to a perforated partition 8 and sprays downwards through the steam. The liquid is cooled by passage through pipes 3, opening near the surface, to coolers consisting of end pipes 5, 6 connected by a series of flattened and ribbed pipes 2 exposed to the air. The cooled water returns from the pipe 6 by a pipe 4 to the base of the vessel 1. The circulation of the water may be aided by pumps. Horizontal fans below the vessel 1 may be used to promote the circulation of air over the coolers. In a modified apparatus, the vessel 1 may be divided by a second horizontal partition into two chambers, from the upper of which the water is withdrawn by the pipes 3, the cooled water being returned to the lower chamber. Vertical trunks connecting the two chambers contain rotary pumps carried by the shafts which operate the air-circulating fans. The pipes 3 may be replaced by a series of flattened pipes to promote the cooling. Specification 137,653, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], is referred to.
