Abstract

229,821. Callender's Cable & Construction Co., Ltd., and Watson, J. F. Jan. 14, 1924. Cable couplings.- Joints comprising a lead tube wiped to the lead coverings of cables include a member within the tube forming a chamber or pocket in which air is entrapped by the filling compound; provision is thus made for subsequent expansion of the compound in the cables. As shown in Fig. 1, a hollow annular member C supports the tube A and is closed by a gland ring D, a wiped joint E securing all to the cable sheath. An opening C<1> admits a quantity of compound to the closed chamber thus constituted until further ingress is stopped by the air pressure set up. The annular member is shown in a modified form in Fig. 4, two wiped joints being used and the gland ring being dispensed with. Figs. 5 and 6 show a ring of metal tubing with two open ends F<1> enclosed within a joint for the same purposes.
