Sleeve joints with packing compressed radially on assembly; joints held by cementitious material and the like.-Fluid-tightness between two pipes 2, 3 and an external collar 4 is secured by means of rubber jointing rings 6, 12 which are compressed within cavities 9, 14, Fig. IV, in the cellar and are prevented from being blown out under the internal pressure by a lip 11 on said collar or by an annular plug 15 which is cemented to said collar. The lip is of such a size as to allow angular movement between the pipe and collar, while the jointing rings may be further secured by a guard ring 16 of closely coiled thick wire which may be positioned within a groove 18 on the pipe or may be incorporated as a core in the said rings. The joint may be additionally secured by bitumen &c. which is poured into the recesses of the collar through an opening 19 therein, while a seal of plastic material may be inserted between the lip 11 and the pipe. The initial position of the collar and' jointing rings is shown in Fig. II, the said rings being compressed by movement of the collar to the right. In a modification, Fig. V, both rings 6, 12 are retained by lips 11, the pipe 3 being provided with a recess 5<a>, 8<a> for the initial reception of the ring 12, while Fig. VI shows the invention applied to the jointing of a pipe to a flange 23.
