Abstract

310,454. Hume Pipe Co. (South Africa), Ltd. April 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Sleeve joints with packing compressed radially on assembly; cup-leather joints; joints held by cementitious materials and the like.-In a joint for pipes 2, 3 wherein the adjacent ends of the pipes are encircled by a collar 4 and fluid-tightness is secured by a rubber &c. packing ring, positioned between each pipe and the collar, one of the packing rings 5 is of round section and is squeezed into an internal recess 10 in the collar so as to contact with the pipe 2, while the second ring 6 is formed so as to slide freely over its pipe 3 and to be brought into sealing engagement with its pipe and the collar by internal fluid pressure. The ring 5 is initially housed in a recess 7 in the collar and is squeezed into the recess 10 by relative longitudinal movement of the collar, while the ring 6 is preferably of U- shaped cross-section. The joint may be completed by a filling of bitumen &c. in the collar cavity between the packing rings. The mouths 12 of the collar are contracted so as to retain the rings against internal fluid pressure, while bitumen may be inserted in said mouths to protect the rings against external influences.
