A pipe joint between pipe ends 1 comprises a pair of collars 2 secured one around each adjacent pipe end adjacent the end face, a pair of resilient sealing rings 5 abutting one against each of the mutually-facing collar ends and projecting radially beyond the collars, at least one circumferential groove 8 in the outside of each collar, a sleeve 6 making a sliding fit over the collars and an interference fit over the sealing rings, a pair of circumferential grooves 7 in the sleeve mating with the grooves in the collars, and flexible rods 9 which are inserted through tangential holes in the sleeve into the open annulus formed by the mating grooves to couple the pipes together. End rings 4 are provided at the pipe ends to prevent the sealing rings, which are of natural or synthetic rubber, sliding or rolling off the pipe ends during assembly. The sleeve and collar ends 13 and 12 respectively are tapered and the extreme ends of rings 4 may be bevelled for ease of assembly. The pipes, sleeve, collars and end rings are of synthetic plastics, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, the collars and rings being secured to the pipes by welding, i.e. solvent welding when of the same material or an epoxy resin. Alternatively, fixing may be achieved by mechanical grip obtained by roughening the mating surfaces, e.g. by circumferential grooving, and/or shrink-fitting. Rigid pipes, such as vitrified clay, concrete or steel piping, may also be joined. As shown, the sealing ring is elongated in section and is provided with three ribs internally and externally. Alternatively, O-ring seals may be used. The flexible rods may be of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, or nylon.
