Abstract

971,124. Jointing pipe lengths. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. March 20, 1963 [March 22, 1962; Aug. 1, 1962], Nos. 10942/62 and 29514/62. Heading F2G. A pipe length 1 of, e.g. fired pipe clay, comprises a first spigoted end 2 provided with a peripheral rib 3 or a recess 9 adapted to seat a sealing ring 8 and a second spigoted end 4 having secured thereon a sleeve 5 of a flexible, resilient, synthetic plastic material. A portion 6 of the sleeve protrudes beyond the end of the pipe, the internal diameter of the portion being such that it affords a slight clearance with respect to the first spigoted end of a similar pipe length which is intended to be inserted therein. The sleeve may consist of polyethylene, polypropylene, P. V.C., polycarbonate, a reinforced polyester resin, polyacetal or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Methods for securing the sleeve to the pipe length comprise the use of an adhesive or mastic filler, moulding the sleeve about the pipe length and shrinking the sleeve on to the pipe after first heating the sleeve to expand it or mechanically expanding the sleeve and then heating it while positioned about the pipe end. Only that portion of the sleeve about the pipe end may be heated, the heating being effected by a gas blower or hot water, but if the whole sleeve is heated than the protruding portion of the sleeve is supported upon a mandrel. In the construction of Fig. 6 (not shown), a sealing ring is provided in a groove of the second spigoted end of the pipe and co-operates with the inner surface of the sleeve. The recess may be frusto-conical in cross-section (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) or comprise a reduced diameter portion at the first spigoted end of the pipe length (Figs. 9, 10, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 12, not shown) the annular recess is filled with a hard, or slightly resilient synthetic plastic material to form the peripheral rib. The recess may be machined or formed in the pipe length before or after firing. If the pipe lengths are fired with their longitudinal axes vertical and with one end supported on a surface, the end will, after firing, have a larger diameter than the other. The sleeve is applied to the larger diameter end. The pipe end may also be reduced in diameter by machining before or after firing.
