Abstract

898,884. Pipe joints. STANTON IRONWORKS CO. Ltd. Nov. 23, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1960], No. 107/60. Class 99(1). Means for interconnecting adjacent pipe lengths embodies an anchoring ring formed and adapted to abut against a shoulder formed on one pipe length or on a member associated therewith and to abut against a shoulder formed on the other pipe length or a member associated therewith, one of the shoulders comprising a side wall of a groove and the other the side wall of an annular cavity of greater width than the ring. The arrangement is such that when two adjacent pipes are jointed together and before internal pressure is applied the ring is engaged in the groove and is located within the cavity out of engagement with its end wall and such that when the pipes undergo relative longitudinal movement due, for example, to internal pressure being applied thereto, the anchoring ring is urged into engagement with the end wall of the cavity. As shown, a split ring 6 of rectangular crosssection is located in a groove 5 formed in the pipe 1 and an annular cavity 7 in the socket 2. The latter has a chamfered shoulder for reception of a rubber, lead-protected, sealing ring 3 that is compressed by a gland 4 bolted to the socket. In assembly, the ring is pre-fitted into the cavity 7 and the pipe 1 is pushed into the socket until the ring engages in the groove 5. Internal pressure in the pipes causes relative longitudinal movement thereof and the ring to be urged against the end wall 8 of the cavity. In modifications, (a) a groove similar in crosssectional shape to the cavity 7 is formed in the pipe 1, (b) the cavity 7, Fig. 6, is provided in the gland 4, (c) the joint embodies a sealing gasket of the kind described in Specification 812,519, the ring 6 being located outside the ring in the manner shown in Fig. 6, (d) the ring 6, Fig. 9, is provided with inwardlydirected projections which engage in grooves 12 formed in the pipe 1, rotation of the pipe causing the projections to be withdrawn from the grooves to allow separation thereof from the socket; a lug cast in the socket engages a depression in the ring to prevent rotation of the latter, (e) two pipes are connected end-to-end by the use of a sleeve, (f) a ring 26, Fig. 13, having a castellated inner surface co-operates with a ring 28 having a castellated outer surface, the castellations of one ring being passed between those of the other ring and the pipes relatively rotated; a lug formed in the socket 22 engages a recess in the ring 26 to prevent rotation of that ring. The cavity 7 may be of uniform depth and the sealing gasket may be replaced by an 0-ring or a ring of the kind which is rolled into position, cement grout being applied externally of the ring; alternatively, the socket is packed with yarn and molten lead then run in.
