Abstract
380,401. Cable joints. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI, 21, Via Fabio Filzi, Milan, Italy. May 2, 1932, No. 12621. Convention date, May 2, 1931. [Class 38 (i).] Communication between the interior of a hollow oil-filled cable and an oil-feed tank is established by means of a joint sleeve 4 having an opening 6 leading to a channel formed within the insulation 11 with which the joint is covered. The cone 2 of each cable 1 is fitted with a hollow plug 3 and the sleeve 4 is compressed thereon hydraulically. Paper insulation 8 is wound thereon leaving a central space 9 that is filled with porous paper to permit fluid communication between the opening 6 and a helical channel formed by winding a helix 10 of thick paper tape or rope. This channel opens at its ends into the oil space in the casing 13. Instead of using a helical winding of thick paper, the channel may be formed in the insulation 11 by using a paper strip 16, Fig. 4, with thickening strips 16<1> along its edges leaving a channel between them. At the outer end of the strip gaps 16a are left in the strip 16<1> to communicate with the casing 13. A valve 7 closes the opening 6 while the casing 13 is evacuated and filled with oil through the hole 12, pressure being then applied to dislodge the valve from its seating.
