[Class 38 (i).] A stop joint for oil-filled cables is built up in the factory, the prepared cable ends being inserted into the sealed casing without disturbing the coupling or its insulation. The coupling comprises a pair of caps 10, Fig. 3, connected by flexible strips 12 and mounted on insulators 4 each cemented to a head 6 that closes the end of the casing 2. The joint is surrounded by a shield 14 connected by a wire 15 to one of the caps 10 and enclosed by paper insulation 16 with silk thread binding, a body of paper tape 17, and a covering of wide impregnated paper 18. The cable end, having the insulation 23 removed in steps, is fitted with a terminal 21 pressed on to the strands 22 and a sleeve 24. A resilient plug is built up of sectors 29 anchored in a disc 31 at one end, and confined by a ring 30 at the other, springs between the sectors tending to expand them. Oil from the cable core is cut off from the passage 25a and holes 26 by a stopper 28 held against the end of the passage by a thread while the cable end is free. After the insulation 36 and an electrostatic shield 37 are applied to the cable, the end is inserted in the insulator 4, the plug 29 entering the cap 10. The extension of the casing 2 is sealed to the cable sheath and oil pressure applied to the space within the insulator 4 to unseat the plug 28.
