Abstract

255,033. Pirelli & Co. July 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Cable couplings.-Relates to means for connecting adjoining sections of high-tension cable of the type having a lead sheath 16 over paper &c. 9 surrounding a stranded conductor enclosing a hollow core filled with thin oil. A flexible connection 11 joins the conducting blocks 10 into a central socket 8 off which the bared ends of the cable sections fit, a strengthening tube 12 of insulation fitting into an outer concentric socket in each part 10. In this way oil cannot pass from one section to another. The straight joint, shown in Fig. 1, or a joint between two inclined sections, has tape 16<a> carefully wound round it and is enclosed in a brass casing 14 narrowed at the ends and connected to a thimble 15 joined by a wiped joint to the sheath 16. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also details illustrated in Figs. 3 (Cancelled) and 4 which show the upper and lower parts respectively of one side of a joint between two sections at an angle to one another. In this case the thimble 15 is secured to the sheathing 16 and to the sleeve 23 by wiped joints, but after the sheath has been stripped off a cylinder 25 of paper with bevelled ends is slipped over the insulation 9 and the bevelled ends are surrounded as shown by a metal cylinder 26 to prevent longitudinal electrical stresses. To ensure good contact between the cable and the end-piece 10, the bared end, Fig. 4 (Can.- celled), is inserted in a central socket as before and there is soldered to it a sleeve 33 having upper and lower flanges 34, 35 and adapted to be connected to and pass outwardly a series of bars 36, which when insertion is first made have a tolerance within the socket, but pressure on the cable releases the top ends from the rim 40 of a cage 40, 41. 42 and causes the lower rim 41 to engage recesses 43 in the bars, thus allowing the springs 38 to press them radially outwards. To maintain the lower strands in position and allow free passage of oil and easy withdrawal, they are soldered on to a sleeve 32 which also engages a distending core 30 in the shape of a coiled spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
