Abstract
1445154 Two-part couplings RAYCHEM CORP 31 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 41094/73 Heading H2E A high-voltage cable coupler comprises: first and second housings each having a first open end for receiving a cable, and a second end porting telescopically engageable with the other housing; insulative support members for supportion at least one plug terminal in one housing and at least one socket terminal in the other housing, each terminal being arranged for electrical connection to a cable conductor, and each plug terminal being arranged to mate with a socket terminal whan the housings are engaged; each support member having means co-operating with means on the other support member for shrouding the mated terminals; and connecting means operably attached to the two housings for moving them axially into and out of engagement. The housings, support members, terminals and connecting means may be disassembled as a kit of parts. The housing 14, Fig. 6, has a tubular extension 224 telescopically engageable within an extension 234 of a complementary housing 12 and sealable thereto by compression of a resilient ring 240 between the mouth of the extension 234 and the base of the extension 224. The housing 12 carries mechanical links 255 slidably mounted in parallel guides 272 and operable by tension springs 256 linked to a bifurcate lever 252 pivoted at 266 to the housing 12. To mate the housings 12 and 14 the lever 252 is. raised (see Fig. 6) and the links 255 are slid into parallel guides 282 mounted on the housing 12 and snapped over spring latches 284 to hold the housings in axial alignment. Depression of the lever 252 then causes the links 255 to draw together the housings, the springs 256 applying maximum axial force when parallel to the coupler axis as in Fig. 2, effectively to compress the sealing ring 240. The cable 24, Fig. 3, entering a respective housing is sealed thereto by a heat-recoverable sleeve 28 shrunk over the end of the cable 24 and over a rearward extension 30 of the housing, and is clamped thereto by a clamp assembly 32. A further seal between the end of the cable sheath 29 and the cores A is provided by a heatrecoverable udder-like transition member 31a. Each cable conductor B, Fig. 3, in the housing 14 is electrically connected to a contact terminal F by a metal crimping sleeve 109, over which a semi-conductive elastomeric sleeve 104 may be slipped to reduce discontinuities in the effective conductor diameter. A laminate sleeve comprising an elastomeric insulative sleeve 103 surrounded by a heat-recoverable sleeve 101 is shrunk over the joint, and over the end of the core insulation C so as to exclude voids; and an overlapping extension of the sleeve 101 is shrunk over a cylindrical flange 160 of a contactcarrying bulkhead G. If the core is screened the ends of the sleeves 103 and 101 are tapered at 107, and the heat-recoverable sleeve 101 is made conductive and connected to the core screen D by a further heat-recoverable sleeve 105 to form a stress cone. The contact terminal F, carried in a cylindrical flange 160 of an insulative connector body or bulkhead G, extends as a contact pin 170 into a flared female insulating shroud 120 having inwardly projecting peripheral wipers 123. The pin 170 is matable with a contact socket 177 similarly mounted in the housing 12 and surrounded by a tapered male shroud 121 having outward peripheral wipers 122, the shroud 121 being sealingly engageable within the female shroud 120. An earth contact terminal 168, 178 may be carried in each bulkhead G, and may be electrically connected to the respective housing 14, 12 by a conductive member 204, 216. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the contact shroud 308 is integral with the laminate sleeve 306, 307 which insulates the terminal joint B, 301.
